We are hunkering down for a few days as a result of the chilly weather and the kids' colds.
We are loosely working on potty training. Ellie is eager to sit on the toilet but usually asks to go right after she has already done her business in her diaper. She tries to go in the toilet but says "it's not working" while looking down at herself. She also likes to continually wipe herself while sitting on the toilet. Harrison still won't have anything to do with the bathroom. We made him go around naked from waist down on Saturday and he screamed and screamed; our neighbors were probably ready to call Child Protective Services. He refuses to go near a toilet. When we ask him if he needs to go to the bathroom, he says he doesn't know how. We have done are best to explain to him that we are more than willing to teach him but he just screams more. We finally gave in and put a pull-up diaper on him and he instantly put it to good use (this was after hours and hours of screaming). If anyone has any tricks of the trade, we are more than open!
Grandpa Cameron (Josh's dad) will be in town this weekend and the next. We are all excited to see him, especially Harrison. He keeps saying things like, "I am going to take Grandpa to the blue park" and "I am going to play with my new toy with Grandpa" and "I need to get better so that I don't get Grandpa sick". Every fifth sentence or so references Grandpa's upcoming visit. The kids plan to model their Halloween costumes for Grandpa and carve a jack-o-lantern with his help. Grandpa has never been to Boston so we might need to squeeze a few fun local activities in too.
Last Thursday Harrison's preschool co-op took a field trip to the USS Constitution. After touring the museum, we took an official tour of the ship. The kids had a wonderful time going below deck where they got to touch the cannons and see where the sailors slept. Since then, Harrison has enjoyed playing "cannonball" (which is a different game every time).
Ellie has become our master stall-er at bedtime. She asks for "one more song" or says "tummy full!" (which really means she wants to go sit in the kitchen and play with her left over dinner). When we try to leave the room she says "______ song"; meaning she fills in whatever word pops into her head. For example, last night I had to sing a pillow song, wall song, and picture song. I have to say, I am not a songwriter and coming up with lyrics (and a tune) for a "wall song" on the fly is more challenging that it may sound.
Harrison just popped into my room to show me his "trick" (jumping on one foot). My favorite is when he makes us watch one of his "magic tricks" which usually involves him jumping off the coffee table and onto the couch (not an approved trick) or throwing a blanket into the air.

Maybe you could try, "You can't take Grandpa to the blue park until you use the toilet." :)
I've got a good book for you--a one day training book, though most people either make fun of me for it, or read it and discard it. It worked wonders for us!
I love reading your blog! Someday I'll be as skinny as your 110 lbs! :)
Perhaps you can suggest to Harrison that a great magic trick would be to use the toilet....Wa-La!
