Harrison's first trip to the ER

I knew this day would come but of course it had to happen at a less than convenient time...

Last night I was getting dinner on the table for the kids and myself. Harrison decided to start spinning (one of his favorite dance moves) in the middle of the kitchen. Well, he bumped into me and ricocheted into a kitchen chair. He fell down and started to cry. I bent down to give him a hug only to find a massive bump on his head with a cut about 1.5 inches long. He was bleeding badly and in lot of pain. He obviously needed to go the doctor but since it was Sunday evening, we were stuck taking him to the ER. Now here comes the problem, Josh had the car at church (I stayed home with the kids because of our colds). I called him repeatedly but he didn't pick up his phone. Finally he called about 30 minutes after Harrison hit his head and I told him he needed to get home asap. He flew home and when he opened the front door and saw Harrison's head he just said "how do I get to the hospital?" During this time, I was telling Harrison that he would need to go to the doctor and he was actually excited. He helped me pick out some toys to take to the hospital.

Josh said Harrison was wonderful at the hospital. Because it was a Sunday evening, the ER was crowded and they had to wait 2 hours before they got into a room. Harrison was great in triage and liked the fact that the nurse asked him questions. He told them "I fell down". When they got into a room, they asked him if their was a movie he wanted to watch. He answered "Calliou" which they didn't have but he settled with "Finding Nemo". The doctor noticed that Harrison was looking around and said he was very curious. Harrison said "yeah, Curious George". The doctor initially thought he would have to put 8 or 9 stitches in. Thankfully, once they cleaned off the cut the doctor realized it was more shallow than he originally thought. Harrison only needed 3 stitches and he sat very still while they put them in.

Josh and Harrison returned home around 10pm and were ready for dinner. They wouldn't let Harrison eat until he had been seen by the doctor and those 3 pieces of cheese he had before he hit his head didn't hold him over. Harrison was wired from the experience but we managed to get him to eat a bowl of oatmeal and some fruit snacks. I then put him to bed and he fell asleep almost as soon as I left the room.

So that's about all the excitement I can handle for the week. I guess I won't be taking Christmas card pictures this week unless I want to challenge my Photoshop skills.

Harrison was the best little patient last night. Everyone thought he was so cute and the doctor was impressed that I did not have to restrain Harrison's head while the stitches were put in. I had Harrison hold my hands and told him to squeeze if it hurt. I have to admit the constant "tummy hungry dad" was really getting old. How do you tell an almost 3 year old that you can't have food?!

My sister has 3 boys and they spend a lot of time in the ER. A doctor once told her that it's normal for boys to be in the ER alot from the ages 2-10. So it's just the beginning:) I'm lucky Aaron is so tame (despite the early knocked out tooth), but Ian will have us there alot, I'm sure.

I'm so glad Harrison was a trooper. He wouldn't be related to his Uncle Nate or Uncle Justin without several childhood visits to the ER for stitches. I can't believe how big he's getting. Give him a big squeeze for me.
