Hairdos and sushi rolls

Today was my first attempt to "do" Ellie's hair. I obviously missed the "girl's hair" class in mom school because I felt completely clueless. For others in my same situation, here are a few things I learned:
1. "Doing hair" for a toddler can be a full-body work out. You may need to employ your best yoga and wrestling moves. Generally speaking, the little girl sees no benefit to having her hair forced into an unnatural arrangement and will try her best to avoid the situation.

2. Never leave the house without a back-up hair band. The one you originally put in will inevitably disappear between leaving the house and arriving at your destination. The result will be an unsightly mohawk.

3. All hair bows are temporary.

4. All hairdos are temporary. Take a picture promptly and plan to pin arms down if necessary.

5. Hair bows are best when removed with wet, sticky, gooey toddler hands (at least that's what usually happens).

6. Girls with curly hair will never have bangs that naturally look good; serious intervention is needed. In humid climates it's not worth the effort.

7. Plan to re-do hair at least 5 times in a day (or give up after 2 tries, which ever works for you).

On another note, Josh and Harrison made sushi last night. The new food set the kids received for Christmas has sushi in it and Josh saw this as a great, ahem, learning experience (read here, a good excuse to make sushi which makes the whole house stink which I despise). Harrison was so into the process (if you look at the first picture you can see Harrison holding the toy sushi as a model). I am sad to report that Harrison actually liked the sushi! No one was more shocked than me. I guess I now live with two stinky sushi eaters.

The first days of hairdos, I remember those. My advice: get the hair damp and sit her in front of the mirror to distract her while you do it. Other than that always travel with a backup plan or they end up walking around with the lovely mohawk that you discovered. And Harrison I'm so glad you are a convert to sushi. One of my favorite things! MMMM.
